TODAY I drilled the hole in my lovely "Blonde"and installed the strap button. Kind of hated to do it but practicality must be served. I find a strap really helpful in many situations and I had a strap that really matched the colors of this pretty uke. My grand-daughter Annie took a vacation trip to Mexico not long ago and at my request brought me back five of the colorful cotton belts woven by peasant women on simple looms. They are just perfect for uke straps. colorful and fun just like the instruments they support. I simply attach a piece of round shoe-string to one end and tie it around the peg head under the strings, then cut a piece of leather that fits over the button for the other end. Here is what the final result looks like.
Once you have attached the strap it is easy to adjust the proper length by simply folding the strap over itself and sewing the fold together to shorten it a bit. The right hand picture shows the folded and sewn section, really un-notisable. These belts are longer than the largest person would use. To fit me I made a 2 1/2 inch tuck reducing the strap length by five inches. This effective and I think charming strap cost me a bit of time, a scrap of leather from an old shoe, and five bucks paid to a Mexican street vendor. I love em!
