All weekend we were treated to the antics of the otters that fish the reef in front to the summer house, and the curious stares of a parade of Harbor seals that lounge on a nearby rocky island and take periodic swims. There were five deer on the property this morning, Bald eagles swoop over-head numerous times each day, and today on a long walk to the community beach we were thrilled to see a huge Golden Eagle which treated us to a fly by not more than 60 feet away.
My apologies to wildlife photographers everywhere. I took this with my iPhone and was pretty pleased with the results considering. This is the rather scarce and seldom seen "Black Oystercatcher". There were a pair of them poking around on the rocks as the tide went out, searching for little mollusks for lunch. They have a large red beak and bright red legs and a raucous, loud and high pitched call. Strange birds seldom seen.
