Every time I get to the French Polish Stage on a new instrument, I begin to think about what I want to build next. Today as I was applying the dilute shellac to one of the new Kasha tenors, I found myself wondering what a Kasha baritone would sound like.
It just so happens that I have a set of Kasha baritone plans- so I got it out to take a look. Do I have wood long enough to make the sides and wide enough to span the width of back and top. I set the tenor I was working on down, got out my tape measure and went to the wood shelves.
It turns out that I have lots of baritone sized wood, but which would I want to use. I have some pretty walnut necks already cut to baritone size. Lots of lovely tiger stripe maple and spruce that would work. A couple of nice pieces of Australian Blackwood for sides and backs, Plenty of Granadilla maybe even enough Cocobolo, but I would rather wait till summer when I can open the garage doors before using that toxic but beautiful stuff. My water-tank redwood is just long enough to use for soundboards, maybe the cedar too. Oh heck, I have plenty of wood that would make a great baritone.
And these tenors are almost finished, I even have a couple of guys who tell me they might be interested in buying a Kasha baritone.
And look at this crazy bracing. It would be a lot of fun to make such a soundboard.
I think I will sleep on it. I haven't made a baritone for a long time. I need to think about the woods some more. Maybe tomorrow I can make a decision, In the meantime the tenors will need lots of finishing. I'll let you know what I decide-when I decide.
thanks for listening
