RECENTLY ON UKULELE UNDERGROUND
There was an active thread about straps for the ukulele. I was aghast at the lack of originality displayed in the postings. People talked about just having bought a leather strap of this brand, or a strap that sticks a hook into the sound hole to support their precious uke. Not one person spoke of making their own straps.
Come on now folks, what could be easier? a strap is not a big deal. I am posting some pictures of some of my favorite uke straps made from the colorful belts sold on every tourist corner in Mexico. They are woven by Mexican women of colorful cotton or macramed material and they sell for just peanuts. If you can get ahold of one of these belts it is a simple matter to tie or sew in a piece of leather cut to fit your strap button and a piece of a round shoe lace at the other end to tie under the strings at the peg head. adjust the length to your individual needs by folding and sewing the strap together at the right length. You now have a comfortable, simple, cheap strap that represents the gaiety and fun of the ukulele.
