I reported yesterday that one of the Custom ukes I am working on is getting a Redwood top rather than the Cedar we had planned originally. Here are the book matched pieces about to be joined in the simple clamp system that I use.
First you must carefully sand the edges to get a perfect fit. I do that by sanding the edges ONE WAY ONLY on a long strip of sandpaper draped over my flat table saw table. When you can see no light upon holding the pieces together in front of a light, they are ready to glue.
My riq is simply a big flat piece of plywood, a bag of lead shot, a couple pieces of saran wrap, two champs and a couple of scraps of wood. The big wooden clamp holds the pressure board flat when the clamp pressure is applied to the two pieces. Without it the spruce pushing board would pop up. Carefully apply a thin coat of glue to both edges, put a piece of Saran wrap on the board and position your pieces on it against the screwed down rail attached to the big board
Another piece of saran wrap on top of the joint, then a flat piece to direct pressure on the join, Then the bag of lead and you are ready to apply the clamp pressure

Here they are, glued together, clamped firmly with a heavy bag of shot to keep them from buckling under the pressure. This system is so simple, but so effective. I will leave it over night as it it too late to work on it now. The glue joint is surely dry having been glued up 4 1/2 hours ago, but I went to my uke lesson tonight and just got home.
Lot of fun tonight as always, Its about time to hit the hay. We were working on Arpeggioed chords tonight. A fun exercise. Brahms lullaby with half the class picking the melody, the other half playing chords arpeggio. Sounds really neat. Give it a try.
