It began with nipping off the fret ends this morning. Then I suddenly remembered that I had not installed the marker dots on either the top or the sides of the fingerboard. Oops, But no worry, I will do that now.
First you must find the center if the 5th, 7th, 10th and 12th frets and mark them with a pencil
Then, with an awl I score the spot that I want to drill a shallow hole. The awl hole assures that the drill will not stray from the proper place.
Now I follow up with a drill bit in a finger drill, gently drilling a hole exactly the diameter of the mother of pearl marker dots.
A tiny drop of glue in the hole, and then the dot is inserted with tweezers and pressed down flat. Then even smaller holes are drilled in the corresponding places on the side and a tiny dot is created there by inserting a white plastic rod and cutting it off at the surface.
Now the fingerboard is carefully arranged on the neck and two tiny brads are inserted in the holes that had been drilled into the unfilled slots. The brads are tapped into the neck and they will hold the fingerboard in position when it is glued and clamped.
Apply the glue, tap the brads in a bit, clamp it up and the job is done.
