THE BEGINNING!

THE MUSIC STAND is begun.  This afternoon I sawed the big slab of cherry into the basic pieces for the new music stand.  I find I will have enough of this very nice, and very well seasoned wood to make two stands.  I will see how the first one goes,  The big challenge will be drilling a six to eight inch 3/4 inch hole down the center of what will be a 1 1/2 inch round turning .  Should I drill the hole first in the 2 x 2 stock, or should I turn it round on the lathe and then try to drill the hole.  And what is the best drill bit to use.  I am thinking an old fashioned screw tipped auger turned very slowly, maybe with a hand brace, might be best.  Any ideas you wood-workers?

Yes I would cut the long piece down with a scarf joint drill the hole in the short piece using a drill press. Glue back together with a tempory end cap to accommodate the lathe then turn. Dcd
