STRINGS IN THE MAILBOX

I GOT HOME from the East Coast to find a set of South Coast Strings in the mail just as Dirk promised they would be.
I built  a baritone with a lovely tone when strung with Bari  strings but I was frustrated by not being able to play it with my GCEA friends.  Dirk sent me a set of his
C20 with no wound strings designed to be tuned GCEA.  They are bright, have great response and feel but I thought they made my Bari sound just like a tenor.
Dirk was working on a new formula and he sent me a pre-market set to try.  This set he calls the" C20 linear string with a round wound base"  Aha, this gets much closer to the bari sound but tuned low G, CEA.  I like them very much as they also seem to have that quick response touch that appears to be a characteristic of South Coast Strings.  They are still not down to the resonate rumble of the Bari when tuned DGBE but this is a darned good compromise .
Incidently Patrick Madsen put me on to South Coast Strings, They make a killer low G tenor string, "G 6500 linear w/wound rounc basses"  and what ever the model Patrick put on his pinecone soprano was magic for that little beauty.    I  think Dirk is on to something good.  Give them a try.
