Today I completed the structural repairs to the big bass that I have enjoyed so much, "Son of Gut Bucket". I had glued the crack together several days ago, but the final fix was more complex. Installing three maple patches inside the instrument.
Once again I used hide glue because of its longer set up time. I was not sure how this new to me technigue would take and wanted all the time I could get before glue set up.
the first act was to drill a tiny hole in the glued crack where I wanted to place a patch.
the first act was to drill a tiny hole in the glued crack where I wanted to place a patch.
Then I inserted a thin wire into the hole reaching into the sound hole to pull the wire out of the sound hole.
Next, the wire went through the hole in the patch and was secured around a tiny bit of dowell.
Now glue is applied to the patch and the wire is pulled and the patch is brought up against the instrument side.
Then the wire is wrapped around the tuner acting as a winch and wound up tight/
And if you look inside the instrument you will see the first patch held tight against the crack.
Hey ! , I think this is going to work.
Now we have two installed.
And now three. This ought to do the job.
and now there are three patches. That ought to do the job-and Son of Gut Bucket can sing again.
