Great progress today on the rosettes for these four tenors. It began with cutting the spalted maple rosettes using the great new circle cutting device made by my clever friend Jon Dale from Philadelphia. Attached to the Dremel tool as a router it did its job perfectly.
The steel pivot pin can be seen protruding through a hole and guiding the router bit in a circle around it. Each hole results in a different diameter circular cut. It is a genius tool.
Here Is the first rosette cut. This was the first done. Because it worked just right, I then drilled pivot pin holes for the other three and cut them. Now to free the rosettes I ran them through the thickness sander upside down, sanding away the spruce backing until the rings dropped free.
Here are the rosettes completed, You can see the spruce backing. The dark stain on the redwood top is a wet coat of shellac that I had just wiped on to seal the wood so it would not be stained by the super glue that will be used to attach the rosettes.
I will show you the installed and completed rosettes tomorrow
