CHALMERS DOANE, "The man who started it all" says James Hill. Chalmers began using the ukulele to teach music in Nova Scotia and his pioneering work has now spread across Canada. It was his methods, picked up in Langley by Peter Luongo that evolved into the terrific program in the Langley schools. Ove 32 years Luongo has developed the program and its apex, the Langley Ukulele Ensemble. Rising out of that program was the great James Hill, arguably the best ukulele master of all.
Chalmers is a charming gentleman and a gifted instructor. Here he is holding my tenor #9 having wanted to take a look at it. I was honored.
I will be posting more pictures from the workshop in ensueing days including some video of the Langley Ukulele Ensemble and also of James Hill demonstrating the Claw Hammer technique in his workshop. Stay tuned.
