BUILDING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS is a little by little kind of thing, at least the way I do it. I try to get two three or four hours in my workshop every day and make some incremental progress on whatever I am working on. The current project is the second two string bass and I am purposely taking it little by little- thinking through each step in the hope that the finished project will be exceptional.
Yesterday I carved down the braces, tapering them so that the top will vibrate from the edges, hopefully making a great sound and volume.
Today I did some fine detail sanding on the volutes and other features of the neck and then carefully sanded the concave dip in its top. this will be a fretless instrument and the fingerboard must curve downward to prevent buzz. I sanded that curve into the top of the neck and then glued a bending rosewood fingerboard onto it.
When the clue is set I also plan to taper this fingerboard a bit to make it easier to play. I have a few things to plan for the next steps- but it is sure fun to take your time and do it "little by little:
