NOW THAT I HAVE a supply of those lovely sound port rings I will share how I intend to use them.
I have taken one of the tough boxwood rings to the oscillating sander to shape it to the curve of the ukulele bout. Once I get that curve perfect I will have a reliable scribing oval to draw the thin pencil line marking the hole I must cut into the uke. I will keep this as my marking tool for future installations.
Here it is ready to use to mark the side bout of the first uke. I will use the thin lead of a .500 automatic pencil to make the finest line I can. Then with great care cut to the inside of that line seeking a perfect fit of one of these rings. Watch in future blogs as I attempt this delicate work and wish me luck.
If you are building a uke and would like to try this send me an email. Cousin Ric says he will make more of them and we can probably get them to you for about $12.00 each. You specify the wood that you would like.
