At an estate sale a while back I bought an old cracked beater of a guitar for ten bucks. It was sitting around in the workshop when my grandson Evan spotted it. He immediately said, "that thing is perfect with that action so high above the fretboard" He tuned it "OPEN G", grabbed a kitchen knife with a rounded steel handle, a pick, and was soon playing the twangy way. I grabbed a uke and we were jamming on "The Crawdad Hole". Lots of fun, pretty weird sounds but pretty good too.
If you have an old beater, or I guess even a good guitar that you want to tune "open" tune it DGDGBD, grab a kitchen knife or a beer bottle and a pick and do some experimenting. Its a hoot. And you can accompany a Uke.
I cheated and put little paper dots on the fret board at A, C, D, F and G.
