Shaping a neck is a favorite part of lutherie for me.

It starts with this small and very sharp draw knife to begin the shape.

Then I switch to a spokeshave to refine the shape a bit.

I begin shaping the" hook" with this great old chisel that I bought in England years ago.

Then a surform rasp to make the rounded curves of the "hook"

And finally it is all smoothed up with a regular rasp

The final touch is burning in the identity info but there will be lots more sanding and shaping after they are on the instruments.

Brian I loved this! Those British files were the real weapons behind "Rule Britannia"-- millions of Brit lads armed with a box of files and turned loose on all the crude castings until thay actually fit together. So says an old cousin in Northern Ireland who made his way by making things fit from huge ship engines to his life long passion; ancient Brit Motorbikes. File on!
