BRANDING DAY

7/7/2015

I SUPPOSE it is vanity that requires that I burn into the interior  of my ukes my initials, the date of building and the instrument number- but I keep hoping that one of my instruments will survive into the next century and someone, somewhere will want to know who built it and when. ----So I brand them.

Here is my wood burning gear, purchased years ago when I was carving duck decoys.  I used this to etch in the feathers.  A neat tool that has been used for countless decoys, bowls, cutting boards and other stuff.  Burns into wood with intense but adjustable heat.

And here is what I do with it.  The label may fade and die but this burned in brand will live as long as the ukulele will.

The next step is to install the side sound ports in these three tenors.  That occupied the rest of the day
Picture
first you mark the place you want them

Then with a tiny Exacto saw you free the hole.

Then you drill with a dremel the outline to create a hole in the ukulele.

And with a sanding disk on the Dremel you carefully perfect the hole and fit the sound port ring.

voila !  the ring is fitted, installed, glued in with super glue and the final finishing can begin. All three of the tenors received their rings today.  They are going to look good and be appreciated by the players of these ukes.  Sound ports are here to stay.

Looking good Brian. I'm glad to see you're burning your initials into the wood. For me, it makes it all that more special.

I've many great ukes but none compare to yours. Those who are blessed to buy one of these will be mighty glad they did.

I'm looking forward to playing them before they leave for their new homes.
