MARYANN, from Pennsylvania wrote today mentioning she was a duck decoy collector and wondered if I have ever carved decoys having seen a puffin in the background of one of my posts. Well the truth is, I have carved quite a few duck decoys, a puffin or three, a number of Canada Geese but my favorite is this big loon that sits on a shelf in our living room. These magnificent huge divers frequent our local waters in the winter time and in the spring develop this wild mating plumage. They are wonderful to see, red eyes and all. The name, Common loon, Northern Loon, Gavia Immer. I made him with a half body to replicate how they look while swimming on the surface. Enjoy Maryann.
