ANOTHER DAY OF PROGRESS

one more day for French Polish for the Triplets, they are really looking good,  The bulk of the day was spent on the two blondes, Alan's #139 and Glenn's #138.  First thing was taking off the tape to see how the bindings look.
Picture
Couldn't be better.  This is #138.  Maple binding on Maple body.  The finish will make the tiger stripe pop.

The next job was inlaying a piece of spalted maple into the end piece of each uke.  You first must clean out the slot, then fit a piece of wood into it.  Once that is done it is glued in and held with tape while the glue sets.

And when the glue sets the piece is faired down and blends nicely with the body.

Now they need heel caps and fret boards.  That will be easy.  The fretboards are already made, just need to be tapered and the frets installed.  These ukuleles are coming together nicely.  Being stuck at home has its advantages I guess.

The first thing most of us will do when the ukulele arrives is take it out ever so carefully and hold it up to admire the workmanship that went into your instrument. The French polish as it shines so bright no matter where the light touches the body. The beautiful look of the woods with their distinct patterns assigned by mother nature. The perfect finish on every part of the instrument from head to toe. The feel of the neck when your hand glides up and down. So smooth and almost silky. Each note rings with such warmth that all you can do is smile from ear to ear. Chords have never sounded so good until that very special moment.

Have you ever noticed when somebody is trying a pen for the first time the most common thing they do is write their signature. What will be your first signature with respect to your new ukulele? Is there a certain lick or favorite song you have in mind? Maybe something as simple as Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do? A favorite cord that soothes your mind and soul when played?

Will you give your instrument a name? Something that will start the relationship on a first name basis. I normally do not do that but given the circumstances leading up to this special build, Brian said he could put a Mi-Si (pronounced My-Sigh) pickup in the ukulele. Twisting the pronunciation around just a hair, the new girl earned the name "Lil Missy". She won't know that unless Brian slips and tells her. I am okay with that.

Whatever it is that you feel when you receive your instrument, I am sure it will hold a special place in your heart each time you pull it out to play. There is also the possibility that the first day might wrap into the second day as you may not want to set it down. That is to be expected. Whatever it is, Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy. The new season will have just began.
