An Amazing Day

This was SeaHawk day in the Pacific Northwest.  Our cute 7 year old neighbor came over after the incredible Green Bay\Seattle game to say hello and show us her face painting.  So the SeaHawks are going back to the Super Bowl.  Can you believe it?
But I must confess I deserted the Seahawks and retreated to my workshop where I was working on the maple neck for my new 2 string bass.  This has been a very interesting project, designing the neck and figuring how it was all going together.  Made great progress today and here are a bunch of pictures showing the process.

first I drew the design of the Volute and sketched it onto the cut out neck

With the help of forstner bits and the drill press, and chisels the channel is cut out

I drew it again on paper and punched holes in the drawing so I could duplicate it on the other side

Then to the band saw for this taper cut

Sawing the taper in the neck was a real challenge for my band saw.  I carefully re-set the saw adjustments to be able to make this deep cut.  Worked out perfectly.

and finally some beginning work with the rasp to begin to shape the neck.    Next will be the pleasure of carving the Volute, the curved head.  That will be fun.  So far so good.
