This afternoon started with great frustration. A borrowed drill bit extension that was supposed to be 3/8ths, would not accept the 3/8ths shaft of my Forstner bit after I had spent an hour going to my friends house to borrow it. No choice but to go to the hardware store to see if I could find one. Three hardware stores and two hours later, I finally decided to ditch the Forstner and try another type of bit for which I could buy an extension.
I got home at 5;30 after fighting traffic in the dark and poured myself a good shot of whiskey. After dinner I took my new drill bit and extension down to the basement, and IT WORKED GREAT. I completed my" hole in the pole" drilling it 7 1/2 inches deep. And here is the music rack inserted into the "pole" fitting just perfectly

I had been thinking that the "pole" was a wee bit thick and looked a little clunky so- flushed with success I decided to put it back on the lathe and thin it down a little. I had saved the spindle end of the "pole" that I had sawed of, for just this contingency.
so I chucked onto the lathe and turned a part of it down to fit into the hole that I had just drilled into the "pole" hoping that I would not split the pole in the process. I turned it down to a snug but not tight fit and put the pole back on the lathe for slimming.
And here it is all slimmed down and looking much better. Now I just need to rout three slots in that thicker base at the bottom to insert and affix the three legs into. When I have done that I will cut off that bottom knob, but I will need that now to center the "pole" on the lathe again to rout the slots. I will make a router guide to attach to the "slider" I made to hold the "pole" when drilling. I am liking the looks of this music stand and having fun making it- Oh, but I got another coat of French Polish on the tenors this morning too.
