A ROUTER DAY

4/10/2020

Let it be known that I am not very fond of routers.  They are noisy, create a huge mess and throw sawdust everywhere,  They might even be dangerous,  But I must admit they do their work quickly and well.

Here, the router is cutting the groove for the binding around the edge of "The Sunburst".  I am hoping to do a sunburst on this beautiful top of Bearclaw Sitka Spruce to hide that ugly pitch pocket you can see on the lower bout.  Kind of excited to try it, never done a sunburst before.  It could be beautiful.

Here is a closeup of the groove.  I ran a small file around it to be sure there will be no interference with the binding.

I got all three of the ukuleles ready for their bindings today.  That meant each instrument was first trimmed with the edge trimmer,  Then routed again with the groove cutting attachment.  There was lots of sawdust and cuttings to vacuum up.

Then you must make room for the binding to go around the top of the body with saw

And chisel, taking care to cut it flat and no deeper than the binding will be.

Then a little finish work with this big bastard file

And these ukes are ready for their binding,
