My wonderful two string bass, SOAGB has been injured again, An awful crack appeared in the area of a previous break when it was caught in the swinging doors of St James Presbyterian Church about three years ago.
I really don't know how this damage occurred. Maybe the cleaning lady hit it with the vacuum cleaner, but the damage is real.
Ouch, a big crack and separation, but I am sure I can repair it.
A photo of the inside shows the patches from the earlier repair.
I slacked the strings, took out the sound post, and wrapped this cord around the foot peg and this front piece and found by tightening the cord the crack came together.
the chosen glue will be Hide Glue. It is very liquid and flows into cracks well, it has a very slow tack time, very strong, and cleans up well with a damp cloth.
And so the glue is applied, the cord its tightened and the crack has closed. Now I will wait 24 hours for the glue to completely set up, and then I will go inside and find a way to support the repair. Perhaps glue on the inside of the crack, perhaps a patch glued on where possible. Hopefully Son Of Gut Bucket will play again.
