A NEW IDEA TODAY

I have been thinking that the "String Through" holes in the bridge were looking a little un-finished.  I got the idea to pass the strings through a portal made of bone.  Took a piece of bone to my friend Kuirt at Bay engraving, an absolute wizard with a laser machine.  The laser burned the bone badly so Kurt suggested white acrylic.  See the result.

Kurt made tiny little donuts of acrylic, I inlaid them with CA glue and then drilled the proper sized string hole with a hand drill, rounded the string hole a bit and restrung the instrument.

What do you think.  I like them, seem to add a bit of class to the instrument.  I think I will make them a standard feature of my ukuleles.  I would appreciate hearing your opinions

I like the idea, but keep that rim really smooth! Maybe several color choices; white, red, black.

I stopped by Brians yesterday to try out his new Sycamore tenor. He had just returned from Bay Engraving with the inserts. Seeing the difference makes it even more clean and classy looking add on Brian.
It's a wonderful uke with great sound. One of the best I've played and it's still breaking in. I feel the donuts are going to make a difference in esthetics and sound.

I have two of his tenors, one of his pinecones and Stu Fuchs #111"brother";baritone #110. I've had 7 total. Brians continual research and development is one of the reasons I keep extra cash around for the next one I can get my hands on. They look great Brian and George made a good suggestion.

Stu is very fortunate to have found his way to Brian Griffins new Kasha design. I think he knows as he's going on his 2nd one.

Nice finishing touch! You might also explore jewelry beads for different color and composition options. Maybe the nuts you use in your shakers. They can be cut in half to give a flat bottom and smooth rounded top.
